A midwife is a trained professional who offers expert care, education, counseling and support to a woman and her newborn during pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. Midwives deliver 80% of the babies born in the world today. The World Health Organization recognizes midwives as the appropriate maternity care provider for most of the world's women, having lower infant and maternal mortality, lower cesarean birth rates and lower health care costs.
