Pregnancy is a time of changes, some eagerly embraced, and others less welcome .Your entire body adapts to new life growing within you. You also face important life changes at home or at work, with family and friends. You need and deserve support, especially since two people now depend on your health and vitality. Massage during pregnancy is a wonderful way to relax, increase your energy, and release discomfort during your pregnancy. The caring touch of massage therapy can help you experience your changing body in a positive, accepting way. Massage can also be something special for you at a time when so much of your attention is on the baby to come.
Massage during pregnancy can help with many of the aches and pains during pregnancy.
Some possible benefits of massage therapy are:
Relieve pain in your muscles and joints that must support added and redistributed weight.
Increase flexibility, making it easier for your body to adjust to a changing shape.
Ease constipation, gas and heartburn as general relaxation stimulates intestinal movement.
Reduces excess fluid retention by gently pushing fluid into circulation where it can be eliminated.
Slow the progress of varicose veins as enhanced circulation lowers pressure on bulging veins.
Relieves headaches caused by tension, constipation, or buildup of metabolic waste products.
Relieves stress by reducing stress hormones.
Integrates mind, body and spirit and is drug-free!
Coping with stress and fatigue
Change, even welcome change, is stressful. The tension caused by stress, along with the physical changes of pregnancy, can sap your energy for coping day-to-day. A soothing massage can relieve physical and emotional tension, help you sleep better, and boost your energy. Massage loosens tight muscles and calms the nervous system. It also increases circulation, bringing energy- producing nutrients to your cells and carrying away metabolic waste products. With massage, you can also become more aware of your body, which helps you recognize tension as it builds during the day and consciously release it.
Learning self-help techniques
Besides the immediate relief you get from a massage, you may also learn ways to make yourself more comfortable at home. You may find ways to use pillows for support when you are lying down. Your massage therapist might give you feedback on your posture or suggest gentle exercises, stretches, and breathing techniques to help you relax and relieve tension.
Is Massage always appropriate?
Massage is healthful and enjoyable during a normal pregnancy. However, because massage is not appropriate for some conditions, your massage therapist will want to know about your general health and your pregnancy. Always tell your massage therapist about any changes.
What exactly is prenatal massage?
Prenatal massage has risen to prominence over the last decade, along with society's increasing awareness of personal health and wellness. Today it's considered an integral part of an intelligent approach to pregnancy.
Just like regular massage, it's a therapeutic workout that loosens the muscles and joints, improves the circulation, relieves fatigue and, in aiding the body, also benefits the mind and spirit. The difference is that prenatal massage is performed by a trained specialist and targeted to the unique needs of mothers-to-be.
All massages are an hour in duration. They are given with great care utilizing the BodyCushion system which allows you to lie face-down before 22 weeks of gestation with proper spinal alignment or on a cushioned table in a "side-lying" position with your body fully supported with pillows. The massage therapist then employs a combination of styles such as Swedish massage, deep tissue sculpting, acupressure and mild stretching to relax and soothe the body, treat and ease tensions. At the end of the session you are left feeling restored, relaxed and comfortable in your new body.
Preparing for labor
Massage can help you prepare for the birthing process in at least two ways. First, through massage you can increase your awareness of tension in your body and learn how to consciously release it. You can also prepare for labor by practicing focus, breathing and relaxation techniques while a tender area is being massaged. Massage therapy also has been proven to decrease the releases of stress hormones that causes tension and increases pain and increases the release of endorphins, the body’s own natural tranquilizers. The result will be increased confidence and control during labor.
“Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of our greeting. Always have a cheerful smile. Don't only give your care, but give your heart as well”
~ Mother Teresa
Mental and Emotional Benefits
Massage can allow your body to reach very deep states of relaxation. When the body truly relaxes the brain can process better and improve concentration and creativity. Deep states of relaxation can allow you to look deep inside yourself for all the answers that lead toward balance and harmony within the world around you. This can give you a wonderful feeling of wellbeing.
Postpartum massage…The benefits after your birth,
Many women forget about their own needs after the birth of the baby. It is equally essential to give special attention to the mother after the birth as before.
Postpartum massages help…
Restore the body to it’s pre-pregnancy condition
Improve posture while caring for a newborn
Relieve trigger points in achy muscles from the effort of giving birth
Keep the new mother feeling balanced by doing for herself, not just for her baby.
The postpartum period is a time of intense transition and a need for rejuvenation and healing. Recovery from labor, learning to live with less sleep, combined with tension and soreness from using your body in a new and demanding way, makes massage a welcome and much needed treat for all new mommies.
Need a Massage?
Not ready to leave your child?
Here’s how it works: You may come alone, or with your baby-you may bring the swing or bouncy seat into the massage room. If your baby needs to nurse during the massage—we encourage and support side-lying breastfeeding!
